Cedarwood Atlas
Cedrus AtlanticaThe plant
Native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Atlas cedar is a large coniferous evergreen tree, 30-35m tall with a trunk diameter of 1.5-2m. The forests grow on mountainsides at 1,370 to 2,200m often in pure forests, or mixed with Algerian fir. The forests provide habitat for the endangered Barbary macaque and have a total area in Morocco of around 163,000 hectares. The Atlas Cedar is a protected species, closely controlled by the Moroccan authorities.
THE OIL
Cedarwood Atlas essential oil comes exclusively from Moroccan sawmills. The sawdust and trunk shavings from the furniture manufacturing industries are steam distilled to provide a thick, slightly sticky yellow to deep amber essential oil. The aroma is sweet, woody, with balsamic undertones that are accented with a top note that is warm and slightly sharp. The oil blends well with other essential oils that are woody and floral.
