Myrtus communis

The plant

Myrtus communis or Myrtle is an evergreen shrub native to north Africa, southern Europe and west Asia. It has been known to grow to up to five metres tall with white or tinged pink leaves. The flowers bloom in mid-spring to early summer before giving way to purplish-black berries. 

THE OIL

Myrtle Essential oil, both red and green have a sweet, fresh, green and slightly camphorous aroma. Distilled from the small glossy green leaves the red Myrtle essential oil has a higher monoterpene a-Pinene content and therefore has a stronger camphourous aroma. Both however share a light, fresh and uplifting aroma.

Emotionally, green Myrtle essential oil is known for calming the mind, promoting restful sleep and easing anxiety. Both oils blend particularly well in the mint, wood, herbaceous and citrus families. It’s been known to be used for the following issues:
