Inula

Inula graveolens

THE PLANT

Native to the Mediterranean basin, Inula is a bushy, aromatic annual herb with small yellow flowers that smell of camphor. This herb thrives in nitrogen rich habitats and open unshaded areas, such as cultivated lands, abandoned fields, roadsides and overgrazed pastures.

THE OIL

Derived from distilling the flowers, Inula Essential Oil is golden in color with a camphoraceous, earthy and slightly sweet floral smell.  It is renowned by aromatherapists as the most powerful essential oil for all sorts of adverse respiratory conditions.

Because of the minimal oil content in the flowers it requires a large quantity of flowers to distill the essential oil. This is reflected in the market price.

FOR AROMATHERAPY

The aroma is camphoraceous as evident by the Camphene content, but there is a unique slightly floral sweetness that transforms this essential oil into a pleasant aromatic.

It’s main application is with respiratory conditions, it is an impressive mucolytic. In chest rubs or inhalers Inula essential oil is a must have and blending with other mucolytic essential oils results in a comforting and pleasant aroma for the diffuser.

THE MARKET

Although most commonly associated with Corsica, Inula also grows wild in Morocco. Supply is still maturing but the quality produced is developing a strong reputation in European and Asian markets.
