Wild Chamomile

Ormenis mixta

THE PLANT

Commonly referred to as Moroccan Chamomile it is a Mediterranean species of flowering plant, often considered a weed. Growing best in moist and rich soil, it does not need extreme amounts of water as it can retain water because of its thicker cuticle, allowing it to store water for longer durations. An annual durable plant it can tolerate both warm/cool and hot environments making Morocco a perfect growing ground.

Facing a growing demand for its oil, it is being exploited widely and more frequently than ever “wildly” threatening its very existence in Morocco. At Atlassence we encourage producers who domesticate it and those who follow sustainable practices consisting of cutting the plant instead of removing it from the soil, which is an easier gesture for workers.

We, at Atlassence, are working with national authorities and associations to advocate for the right legislation to protect the plant. It is important for Atlassence as it is the emblem of the native city of its founder!

THE OIL

Derived from distilling the leaf and flowers it is chemically and aromatically different from Roman or German Chamomile. It has a slightly camphoraceous, fresh aroma and is known for it’s calming properties.

FOR AROMATHERAPY

It is known to be used in helping the treatment of depression, colitis and irritability and blends well with cypress, lavander, cedarwood and oakmoss.

THE MARKET

An annual plant, demand always exceeds supply and this is almost a steady trend.
